Terrific trio nominated for July's Jockey of the Month

Tom Marquand, Jim Crowley and Cieren Fallon Jr have all been nominated for July’s Jockey of the Month competition. They have had outstanding performances during the second month of the 2020 Flat Jockeys’ Championship.

Tom Marquand

Tom Marquand enjoyed an impressive 28 wins in July, propelling himself into second place in the 2020 Flat Jockeys’ Championship, just seven wins behind leader and reigning Champion Flat Jockey, Oisin Murphy.

The 21-year-old culminated his incredible month with five wins at the prestigious Qatar Goodwood Festival last week, kicking off the week by reaching 50 winners for the season with Tomorrow’s Dream in opening race of the festival on Tuesday 28th July.

Amongst his other victories at the Qatar Goodwood Festival, Marquand enjoyed a Group 3 double with One Master in the Saint Clair Oak Tree Stakes and Pablo Escabarr in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Glorious Stakes on Friday 31st July.

During July, Marquand also enjoyed a treble at Lingfield Park Racecourse and six doubles across Windsor, York, Leicester, Chepstow and Bath.

Jim Crowley

2016 Champion Jockey, Jim Crowley claimed a number of big race victories amongst his 19 wins in July. The 42-year-old enjoyed five Group wins, including a historic fourth King George Qatar Stakes with Battaash at the Qatar Goodwood Festival and smashing the track record in the process.

Previous to that, Crowley stormed to victory with Mohaather in the Qatar Sussex Stakes, a race that forms part of the 2020 QIPCO British Champions Series, and also enjoyed success with Tabdeed in the bet365 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury Racecourse.

At the beginning of the month, Crowley also came out on top with Al Aasy in the Bahrain Trophy Stakes and Nazeef in the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes, both at Newmarket Racecourse, with the latter also forming part of the QIPCO British Champions Series.

Cieren Fallon Jr.

2019 Champion Apprentice, Cieren Fallon Jr, celebrated his landmark Group 1 win aboard Oxted in the Darely July Cup Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse. The race, which forms part of the 2020 QIPCO British Champions Series, was Fallon’s first ride in a Group 1 contest.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a total of ten victories in July, taking his tally for the season 14 wins and therefore top and three clear of second-placed Harrison Shaw in the 2020 Apprentice Jockeys’ Championship.

Fallon, who is hoping to the first jockey since Gary Bardwell in 1988 to retain the Champion Apprentice title, finished the month with a double at Wolverhampton Racecourse on Friday 31st July.
