About

Jamie Spencer is an exceptionally talented Irish jockey who has reached the pinnacle of Flat racing in both Great Britain and Ireland.

Known as the “Celtic King of Waits,” he is famous for a distinctive and sometimes polarising “hold-up” riding style, where he deliberately settles horses at the back of the pack to deliver a late, precision-timed surge. This high-stakes approach has made him one of the most successful riders of his generation, having been crowned Champion Jockey in Ireland (2004) and British Champion Jockey twice (2005 and 2007).

Spencer’s career began with a bang when he became the youngest jockey to win a European Classic, taking the 1998 Irish 1,000 Guineas aboard Tarascon at just 17 years old. Since then, he has amassed over 2,000 career winners in Britain alone and more than 30 Group 1 victories worldwide. His curriculum vitae includes major British Classics like the St Leger (Brian Boru, 2003) and the Epsom Oaks (Sariska, 2009), as well as a memorable Ascot Gold Cup win on Fame and Glory in 2011.

Even in the later stages of his career, Spencer remains a major force in the weighing room. After famously reversing a short-lived retirement decision in 2014, he returned as a freelance jockey and has continued to deliver masterclasses on the big stage. He recently made history in October 2025 by winning the British Champions Sprint Stakes on Powerful Glory at odds of 200-1, the largest-priced winner in the history of European Group 1 racing.
