Rossa Ryan was born into a racing family in Ballinderry, County Galway. As the son of National Hunt trainer David Ryan, he was immersed in the sport from a young age and began his competitive journey on the Irish pony racing circuit, where he rode a prolific 150 winners. Although his father’s background was in jump racing, Ryan pivoted to flat racing after being talent-scouted for an apprenticeship in England at age 16.
Having worked his way through the ranks at Richard Hannon’s yard, Ryan’s breakthrough Group 1 win came in the 2023 July Cup on Shaquille.
He was crowned British All-Weather Champion Jockey in early 2024. Later that year, he achieved elite international success by winning the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Bluestocking and the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint on Starlust.
On 3 October 2025, he recorded his 1,000th British winner aboard Blazeon Five at Ascot, shortly after reaching 1,000 worldwide wins and as of early 2026, he remains one of Britain’s most prolific riders. Ryan has consistently tallied over 200 winners per year, doing so most recently in both 2023 and 2024.
He currently serves as the first-choice jockey for trainer Ralph Beckett.
