Richard Johnson OBE is one of the most successful and resilient figures in British National Hunt racing history, retiring in April 2021 with 3,819 career wins—the second-highest total ever behind his long-time rival, Sir Anthony McCoy.
Throughout a career spanning nearly three decades, Johnson was defined by his extraordinary perseverance; he finished runner-up in the British Jump Jockeys’ Championship 16 times before finally claiming the first of four consecutive titles in 2016 following McCoy’s retirement.
His glittering CV includes 23 Cheltenham Festival victories, notably winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice on Looks Like Trouble (2000) and Native River (2018), as well as triumphs in the Champion Hurdle and Queen Mother Champion Chase.
