Richard Hughes

Richard Hughes is one of the most prolific figures in British and Irish racing, having transitioned from a three-time British Champion Flat Jockey (2012–2014) to a highly successful racehorse trainer.

Over a riding career spanning more than 25 years, Hughes amassed roughly 2,437 wins in Great Britain and over 3,000 worldwide. Though he had to wait until 2013 to land his first British Classic, he did so in spectacular fashion by winning the 1,000 Guineas on Sky Lantern and the Epsom Oaks on Talent just a month later. He is also famous for equalling Frankie Dettori’s record of riding seven winners at a single meeting, achieving the feat at Windsor in October 2012.

Hughes retired from the saddle in 2015 at the Glorious Goodwood festival—a venue where he had been exceptionally dominant with 169 career winners. He immediately moved into training, following in the footsteps of his late father, the dual-purpose legend Dessie Hughes. Based at Weathercock House in Lambourn, he has quickly established himself in the training ranks, most recently securing his first Group 1 win as a trainer with No Half Measures in the July Cup in July 2025.
