National Racehorse Week

What is National Racehorse Week?

It’s a nationwide celebration that allows the public to see what life is like for thoroughbred racehorses away from the racecourse.

What happens during this celebration?

For nine days each year, training yards, studs and retraining centres across Britain invite the public – free of charge – to go behind the scenes of the sport. Most people may only see racehorses on the TV or at a distance on the racecourse, so National Racehorse Week is about giving an insight into life away from the track, shining a light on the levels of care for these amazing animals.

What type of things will I experience?

There’s so much cool stuff to see. As well as meeting the horses (and sometimes their foals), you may get to see an equine swimming pool demonstration – that’s watching horses swim! You may experience a water treadmill session or see how horses get their shoes fitted by farriers. There are also demonstrations on veterinary care, horse physiotherapy, dentistry and even a look at what they eat and how they’re groomed.

Why is it so special?

No other major sports open their doors to the public in this way. It’s a unique chance to not only get close-up to thoroughbred horses but also chat to the people who dedicate their lives to their welfare. They are always happy to answer any questions you may have so you get a better idea of the day-to-day love and care the horses get.

Can anyone get involved in National Racehorse Week?

Yes, it’s open to anyone. Lots of families go, and in fact, almost a third of those attending last year were Under-18s. You don’t need to have any knowledge about horses or horse racing – that’s what the day is all about, finding out more. Last year, 67% of people who attended had never been to an open day before.

Will there be an open day near me?

There were 95 open days at studs, training yards, and retraining and rehoming centres last year with more than 14,500 free places on offer. Horses and their carers also attended charity and community events, care homes and hospitals, and some even visited schools! You can see where and when events are happening when bookings go live on the National Racehorse Week website in early July.

It sounds great. Where can I find out more?

The National Racehorse Week website has more information , and you can sign up to the newsletter to get notified when NRW events are happening.

There’s also more on the social channels at Facebook and YouTube.
