Jim Crowley is one of the most respected figures in British Flat racing, distinguished by his rare and successful transition from National Hunt (jumps) racing to the top of the Flat honors list.
After starting his career over hurdles and fences, where he rode roughly 300 winners, he switched codes in 2006. His determination and tactical skill culminated in a historic 2016 season where he was crowned British Champion Flat Jockey, breaking the record for the most winners ridden in a single month (46) during his title charge.
His career reached new heights that year when he was appointed as the retained first-choice rider for the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s powerful Shadwell Estates operation. This partnership granted him access to some of the finest racehorses in the world.
Crowley became synonymous with the legendary sprinter Battaash, known for his blistering speed at Goodwood and Ascot, and more recently, he was the regular pilot for Baaeed, who retired in 2022 as the highest-rated turf horse in the world since Frankel.
Beyond his technical ability, Crowley is noted for his resilience and professional longevity. Even after a serious multi-horse accident at Kempton in 2016 and more recent injury setbacks, he has remained a consistent fixture at the top of the sport.
