Gavin Sheehan was not born into a racing family and had his first experience in pony racing at the age of 14.
He rode his first winner under rules in Ireland aboard Whatsabillion at Thurles Racecourse in 2011 and managed only one more victory before moving to England in 2012.
At the age of 18, he moved from Ireland to start racing around Britain in 2012. Gavin quickly found success in England, taking up the Conditional Jockey’s Championship in 2013/14 with 50 victories. The following year, in 2014/15, Gavin Sheehan won 73, which was a career high.
Gavin Sheehan is now recognised as an accomplished Irish jump jockey known for clear tactical thinking, strong race positioning and reliable performances in major events. His career includes victories at the highest level, including a celebrated win in the King George VI Chase, which showcased his ability to excel on racing’s most demanding stages.
He has worked with a wide range of leading trainers and is valued for his calm presence and consistent results. In recent years, family life and fatherhood have introduced a new sense of balance and purpose, adding emotional depth to his already established professional reputation.
