The summer season is in full swing and some of the biggest Flat festivals dominate July’s Premier Racing fixtures.

Haydock Park

Old Newton Cup Festival Saturday, Saturday 5 July

The Old Newton Cup tops the bill on Haydock’s card. The race is a nod to the old Haydock racecourse on Newton Common where racing took place from 1678.

The Group 2 Lancashire Oaks compliments the historic handicap to make it an excellent end to the track’s three-day meeting.

Europe’s best middle-distance performers will take each other on in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

It is the traditional first meeting of the Classic generation and the top-class older horses over the 1m4f Derby distance.

The coveted Group 1 prize has been won by some of Flat racing’s greatest horses. Just five years ago Enable became the first horse to win Ascot’s midsummer highlight for the third time.

This season’s race is shaping up to be a superb contest with last year’s winner Goliath, St Leger hero Jan Brueghel and prolific globetrotter Rebels Romance all among the contenders.
