Female jockeys are on the rise in British racing, both over the Jumps and on the Flat with Grade / Group races being regularly won by these sporting stars.

There’s also a number of well-established trainers that are making a sizable impression on the biggest events in British racing, for example, the last Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Sizing John was trained by Jessica Harrington and the eight-year-old gelding will be out to defend his crown this year.

To celebrate, National Girls and Women in Sports Day, here’s just some of the top girls and women in British racing.

Bryony Frost (Jumps)

Bryony Frost is very much the jockey of the moment.

This season she’s won two Stobart Jockey of the Month awards (November and December) as well as a  first Grade One victory aboard Black Corton in the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day.

Frost has continued her fine form since the turn of the year winning two Grade three races, with some eye catching riding displays.

Lizzie Kelly (Jumps)

Back in 2015 she became the fist woman to win a British Grade 1 race on Tea for Two at Kempton on Boxing Day, a day she certainly won’t forget.

Her latest big victory came under two weeks ago at Cheltenham, winning the Grade Two Cleeve Hurdle driving  Agrapart all the way out in a pulsating race.

Jessica Harrington (Jumps)

Harrington has been successful in Britain and Ireland for a number of years now, training incredible horses such as the double Champion Chase winner Moscow Flyer.

The Irish trainer has continued to succeed in recent years, showcased by winning last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup with Sizing John.

Josephine Gordon (Flat)

In 2016, Gordon took her career to new heights, having 70 winners during the season including 50 in the Stobart Apprentice Championship. In the process, she became only the third woman to win the Stobart Champion Apprentice title.

The following season, she won her first big handicap race and two Group races. Gordon beat her 2016 total of winners and finished 24th in the Stobart Jump Jockeys’ Championship.

In November she rode her 100th winner of the year, becoming the second female jockey to reach this milestone after Hayley Turner in 2008.

Hollie Doyle (Flat)

Doyle recently brought up 100 winners in her career at Lingfield at the age of just 21.

A young apprentice with a bright future ahead of her, she rode 59 winners in 2017 including victory in a highly competitive listed race at Salisbury.
