Features | 8th August 2022

These three jockeys have had a spectacular month in July. Vote for your July Jockey of the Month.

The three jockeys nominated for July Jockey of the Month 2022 are Hollie Doyle, PJ McDonald and Rob Hornby.

All three won Group 1 Races during the month. Rob Hornby picked up successive big race victories at Newmarket whilst Doyle and McDonald secured prestigious wins at Goodwood and Ascot respectively.  Find out more about each jockeys’ month below.

Rob Hornby has been crowned July Jockey Of The Month with 58% of the vote.

Hollie Doyle

One of the most recognisable faces in the sport, Hollie’s relentless drive to the top shows no sign of slowing down.

In the same month that the Lionesses roared to success in the Euros, Hollie swooped to victory aboard Nashwa in the Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Following the race the ever-modest Doyle deflected all praise onto her star filly commenting, “she gave me some feel, it’s unreal. Nashwa is a horse of a lifetime, and if it wasn’t for Imad (The owner) for giving me this opportunity, I might not have enjoyed days like this”

PJ McDonald

Stepping in for the injured Martin Dwyer, PJ McDonald enjoyed the biggest win of his career aboard Pyledriver in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Despite being 25/1 outsiders, the pair proved a match made in heaven as they ran out easy winners ahead of their much vaunted rivals.

“For me, these are days that you don’t think are going to happen. This has come to me by luck and someone else’s misfortune, but that was as smooth as it could have been, he’s gone through the race like a knife through butter.”

Rob Hornby

Jockey Rob Hornby enjoyed the July Festival of his dreams. The Berkshire-based jockey partnered star filly Alcohol Free to victory in the July Cup just 24 hours after an initial top level success aboard Prosperous Voyage in the Falmouth Stakes.

In doing so, the 27-year-old becomes the first jockey to win both Group One races in the same season since 2004.

“Who would have thought it (winning two Group Ones in two days)! It has been a crazy year and I’m privileged to ride these best horses in the best races. There are so many people that have got me here and they still will.
