VACANCY: Communications Director – Great British Racing

Think you’ve got what it takes to define the ongoing PR and Marketing strategy for Great British Racing and British Champions Series?

Great British Racing (GBR) is the central promotional and marketing body for British Horseracing. Its aims are to broaden racing’s popularity and, in doing so, help increase engagement with and participation in the sport.

80% of GBR’s year-round output relates to earned coverage, with a particular focus on content creation. Its work is supplemented with advertising and promotion to support specific campaigns.

An energetic, hands-on Communications Director is sought to deliver GBR’s PR and Marketing strategy.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the Communications Director will be responsible for leading a small, integrated PR and marketing team in delivering the company’s stated aims and objectives of increasing racing’s popularity by engaging with new customers.

The role also includes responsibility for the promotion and marketing of British Champions Series and Day – a set of racing’s premium commercial rights.

The Communications Director will be able to develop and execute PR and Marketing strategies, interpret consumer insight to influence activity and also exploit opportunities as they arise. They will also be expected to lead a team that creates and develops cracking ideas that help make horseracing famous.

She or he will be comfortable managing a diverse group of stakeholders and contributing to a broader industry communications strategy. The Communications Director will be expected to maintain and develop the existing excellent relationships with broadcasters, media partners and – very importantly – journalists.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • A willingness to serve in both an execution and strategic capacity
  • Evidence of creative flair
  • A proven track record in securing earned media coverage
  • Extensive working knowledge of the digital landscape and awareness of trends
  • Excellent existing media relationships – particularly in the consumer sector
  • Fluency in all marketing disciplines
  • Experience in managing multi-stakeholder relationships
  • Excellent written, verbal and inter-personal skills
  • A passion for sport and entertainment

Knowledge of horseracing is helpful though not essential, but experience in the sporting sector is preferable.
