Three Top Jump Jockeys nominated for the April Stobart Jockey of the Month
Davy Russell, Sean Quinlan and Richard Johnson OBE have all been nominated for April’s Stobart Jockey of the Month competition, following their tremendous performances in the final month of the 2018/19 Stobart Jump Jockeys’ Championship.
Last Saturday, Johnson was crowned Stobart Champion Jump Jockey for the fourth consecutive season at the bet365 Jump Finale at Sandown Park. A day earlier, he claimed his 200th victory in the campaign with Load Up Time at Perth Racecourse, resulting in him reaching the double-century mark for only the second time in his illustrious career.
Cumbria-based, Quinlan, enjoyed a successful April with nine victories in total. One of those being the biggest of his career, aboard Takingrisks in the Coral Scottish Grand National, taking his total for the season to 61 victories – surpassing his previous career best total of 38.
And who could forget, Davy Russell storming to a second successive victory with Tiger Roll in the Randox Health Grand National at the start of the month – entering the history books as the first to do so since the legendary Red Rum in 1973 and 1974.
Richard Johnson secured 11 victories during April, including two doubles at Perth at the end of the month. The fine of those wins at Perth being with Load Up Time which marked his 200th win for the season.
On being nominated he said: “It’s great to be nominated for the Stobart Jockey of the Month. April was a fantastic end to another fantastic season for me. I always had my sights on 200 wins, so it was great to finally do that at Perth.
“To then end the month being crowned Stobart Champion Jump Jockey for the fourth year in a row, is again a moment I will never forget and what we continue to work so hard for.”

Sean Quinlan totalled nine wins in April, taking his tally for the campaign to a career-best 61. Amongst the nine victories were three doubles – two of those coming at Perth and the other at Carlisle. However, the biggest win came at Ayr with 25/1 shot, Takingrisks, in the prestigious Coral Scottish Grand National.
On his successful month and season, Quinlan said: “It’s brilliant to have been nominated for April’s Stobart Jockey of the Month. It was a great end to a year that has been a revelation for me. I set a target of 50 wins at the start of the season and finished on 61, which is fantastic.
“To top that all off with the win in the Scottish Grand National, which is by far the highlight of my month, season and my career. Add to that, the double for both my trainers (Jennie Candish and Nicky Richards) at Perth, was truly amazing.”

Irish-based, Russell and Tiger Roll entered the history books in April, as the first duo to win back to back Randox Health Grand National’s since Brian Fletcher and Red Rum in 1974 and 1975. Russell also enjoyed success earlier on in the day, with a win aboard Oruna in the Doom Bar Maghull Novices’ Chase.
