The Top 5 Lockinge Champions

The Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes is the third Group One race of the flat season following on from the Guineas.

There have been many superstars that have won the Lockinge, including the leading jockey Lester Piggott with six wins and Sir Michael Stoute has seven wins as the leading trainer. There have been many racehorses that have gone on to classic success and other champions have won the race twice!

Newbury is a leading British racecourse, across the jump and flat seasons, staging the Hennessy Gold Cup, the Challow Novices’ Hurdle and its biggest race-day on the flat – the Lockinge!

Watch jockey George Baker’s guide of the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes.

Pall Mall – 1958 and 1959

The first ever running of the Lockinge was in 1958 and it was won by the 2,000 Guineas winner Pall Mall. The British-trained thoroughbred was owned by Her Majesty The Queen who has been a highly successful owner throughout her life, winning some of the biggest races on the flat.

The 1958 race was won easily by the 4/6 favourite and Pall Mall went on to successfully defend his Lockinge title the following year, a feat only achieved by two other racehorses.

It was over a decade later when Welsh Pageant managed to match the feat achieved by Pall Mall by winning the 1970 and 1971 Lockinge Stakes.

Welsh Pageant was destined for greatness, his sire (father) was Tudor Mistrel who won the 1947 2,000 Guineas as well as having a highly impressive record of eight wins out of his ten races!

Brigader Gerard – 1972

One of the best racehorses of all time, some argue that he’s on a par with the unbeaten Frankel having only lost one out of his 18 races. Brigader Gerard’s honours include classic success in the 2,000 Guineas and victories in 10 races which now hold Group One status.

Brigader Gerard won the Lockinge Stakes in a dominant performance as a four year old which at the time extended his unbeaten run to 15!

Soviet Line – 1995 and 1996

The third dual winner of Lockinge Stakes, Soviet Line had a very unique career, it was only until 1994 as a four year where he became a top performer winning five races that season.

Soviet Line won the Lockinge Stakes as a five and six year under the guidance of trainer Sir Michael Stoute. The second victory was made all the more impressive coming in as third favourite and winning in front of Charnwood Forest by a neck.

As a gelded horse, he continued to win big races over in America until the age of nine!

Frankel – 2012

The greatest horse of his generation and possibly ever! Find out all the incredible facts and figures about Frankel’s career here!

Frankel’s victory at the 2012 Lockinge Stakes was the 10th of his career and the Sir Henry Cecil trained horse finished five lengths clear of Excelebration who was a talented horse and a little unfortunate to be born in the same generation as Frankel.

Jockey Tom Queally at the time said “People ask what makes him so good, it may be his cardio-vascular system or whatever I don’t know, but it’s like Usain Bolt – he’s just better than all the rest!”

The Lockinge is one of the many British Champion Series and Group One races to look forward to this flat season.
