The 9,260/1 four-timer that saw Oisin Murphy strike gold!
The 2013 Gold Cup is surely one that will go down in history. Not only was the winner, Highland Colori, an outside 20/1 shot for the race, but his jockey Oisin Murphy burst onto the scene with four winners at combined odds of 9,260/1!
Murphy kept up a whirlwind start to his racing career when piloting Highland Colori to lift the prestigious Ayr Gold Cup. He then followed this up with three more impressive winners – Silver Rime, Levitate and Cockney Sparrow.
Highland Colori delivered a staggering performance on rain-softened turf at Ayr to snatch the title in Europe’s richest sprint handicap, improving on his second placing in the Silver Cup to shine in the Gold Cup.
This was Murphy’s first high-profile win, and Highland Colori really made his mark on the competitive 26-runner sprint winning by more than a length from Louis the Pious. He ran a convincing winner, as did Murphy’s other rides Levitate at 5/1, Silver Rime at 20/1 and Cockney Sparrow at 5/2.
This is no mean feat for any jockey, but is made all the more impressive given that the 18-year-old had only begun his career less than a year before the race, when recruited by Andrew Balding’s stable at Kingsclere.
This season, Murphy has 40 wins to sit in 32nd place in the Stobart Flat Jockeys’ Championships.
