Terrific trio nominated for June Jockey of the Month after Royal Ascot success
Hayley Turner, Frankie Dettori, and Daniel Tudhope have all been nominated for June’s Jockey of the Month competition, following impressive performances during one of the busiest months of the 2019 calendar.
36-year-old, Turner, entered the history books in June, becoming the first female jockey in 32 years to win a race at Royal Ascot.
Her win aboard Thanks Be in The Sandringham Stakes was the first victory at the prestigious five-days of Flat racing since Gay Kelleway’s triumph with Sprowston Boy in the Queen Alexandra Stakes back in 1987.

Discussing that moment, Turner, said: “It was a special moment. It felt like a normal race at the time and it wasn’t until I crossed the line that I realised what a special achievement it was. Whether your mal or female, winning at Royal Ascot is what dreams are made of – it was an incredible atmosphere.”
The jockey, who is based in Newmarket, also enjoyed wins at Chester, Chelmsford and Nottingham during June and has now secured a total of 10 wins from 91 rides so far this season.
On being nominated for June’s Jockey of the Month, Turner said: “It’s fantastic to be nominated and it would be unbelievable to win the vote, Frankie and Daniel are two amazing jockeys so I have no chance, but if I was to win that would be unbelievable.”
Dettori produced another memorable performance at Royal Ascot, with seven victories across the five-days, which resulted in him being named top jockey at Royal Ascot for the first time since 2004.
The 48-year-old stole the show on day three (Thursday 20 June) with a fantastic four wins in the opening four races – culminating in a second successive Gold Cup triumph with Stradivarius.

The other three Royal Ascot victories for the Italian came with Advertise in the Commonwealth Cup, Crystal Ocean in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and Raffle Prize in the Queen Mary Stakes.
The three-time Champion Flat Jockey, began the month with wins at Lingfield and Newmarket, taking his season tally to 19.
Discussing the Jockey of the Month nomination, Dettori said: “It’s fantastic to be nominated for Jockey of the Month once again – June was somewhat of a quiet month for me until we got to Royal Ascot and then from then on I couldn’t of wished for it to go any better!
“I love everything about Royal Ascot and there’s no better feeling than winning the big races there. To win four in a row was something I never expected and a massive achievement, but I was still gutted not to win the fifth!
“To finish top jockey at Royal Ascot was a superb feeling and to be named Jockey of the Month would definitely top it off.”
Tudhope has enjoyed a brilliant start to the 2019 title race and continued that momentum in June with a total of 24 wins throughout the month – taking his tally for the campaign to 50 wins – just four behind current leader Oisin Murphy.
The month began with the 33-year-old claiming his 1,000th UK career win abaord Ingleby Hollow at Thirsk Racecourse on Monday 3rd June – a day where he also secured one of four doubles in the month.
Another one of those doubles and probably the most notable, came on the opening day of Royal Ascot, where Tudhope enjoyed victories with both Lord Glitters and Addeybb in the Queen Anne Stakes and Wolferston Stakes respectively.

The Yorkshire-based jockey then added two additional Royal Ascot wins, with Move Swiftly in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes and Space Traveller in the Jersey Stakes.
Discussing the month, Tudhope said: “It has been an amazing month for me. Starting off with my 1,000th career win at Thirsk which is my local track and it being for David O’Meara, who has shown me so much support throughout my career, was a special moment.
“Then to have four winners at Royal Ascot was beyond belief – I also had some close places as well so it was a great few days for me and I wouldn’t have done it without all the support.”
Other victories amongst the 24 in June included with Klassique in the Betway Pinnacle Stakes at Haydock Park, followed by a tremendous treble at Newcastle Racecourse on Thursday 27th June.
Tudhope continued: “It’s great to be recognised and to be named Jockey of the Month would be the icing on the cake of what has been a fantastic month for me.”
