Stobart Jockey of the Month – March 2018
The vote to elect the Stobart Jockey of the Month for March is now open! Reigning Stobart Champion Jockey Richard Johnson, rising star Lizzie Kelly and Cheltenham top jockey Davy Russell are the three vying for the title.
Head over to Twitter to cast your vote, but first, let’s remind ourselves just what got them nominated…
No prizes for guessing which moment in March sealed the reigning champ’s position in this particular shortlist.
Johnson and his gallant mount, Native River, combined with brilliant effect to take the Cheltenham Gold Cup spoils last month. The tough as teak duo led from start to finish as they eventually shook off the attentions of talented maverick Might Bite and sealed their special spot in Cheltenham Festival history.
Experienced broadcaster Brough Scott labelled the race the best he’d ever seen in the immediate aftermath.

Leading light Lizzie banished her Cheltenham Festival demons with great effect in landing her maiden win on the opening day of this year’s Festival.
Partnered with the well-backed favourite Coo Star Sivola in the Ultima Handicap, Lizzie gave punters no such worries as she steered an incident free course to victory.
Having suffered a disappointing fall in the 2017 Gold Cup, Kelly was understandably stuck for words in the immediate aftermath of the race.
“After last year, I’d made my peace with never being a Cheltenham Festival winner”

Veteran jockey Davy finally got his hands on one of the most coveted honours in the sport, the top rider award at the Cheltenham Festival.
Having registered at least one winner at the Prestbury Park Festival on each of the last 12 renewals, it came as no surprise to see the Irishman take the top jockey honours.
He commented, “you need to get over the three (winners) to win it. I’ve had three winners here before and finished second. It’s very nice to win it at this stage of my career.”
