Silvestre De Sousa 100 Not Out In The Stobart Jockey Championship
Congratulations to Silvestre De Sousa who today brought up a century of victories in the Stobart Flat Jockeys’ Championship and is currently 34 winners clear of his nearest rival which is Jim Crowley.
The leading contender has reached the milestone from 479 rides at a strike rate of 21%, and it only took De Sousa 96 days which is considerably faster than the last two years where he reached 100 in 137 and 120 days respectively.
De Sousa said: “I’m really pleased to have reached a century of winners in the Stobart Flat Jockeys’ Championship. I am in a really nice position and hold a decent lead at the top of the table thanks to all the support I’ve had from owners and trainers throughout the season and the hard work of my agent Shelly Dwyer. However, I am taking nothing for granted, it is business as usual for me and I will continue to push until the end of the season.”
Despite De Sousa’s wariness of his weighing room rivals, he is in a considerably better position than this time last year. 2016’s Stobart Champion Flat Jockey Jim Crowley identified the Qatar Goodwood Festival (Glorious Goodwood) as the turning point in his season after which he went full tilt at securing his first title.
Following the final day of Glorious Goodwood 2016, De Sousa sat at the summit of the table alongside Ryan Moore with the pair on 57 winners each, Jim Crowley just 13 winners behind in sixth. Fast forward 12 months, and the Brazilian has 100 winners to his name and is 31 victories clear of Jim Crowley in second place.
Trainer Mark Johnston has supplied the Newmarket-based De Sousa with the most winners during the 2017 Stobart Flat Jockeys’ Championship, with the pair successful on 16 occasions so far. His luckiest racecourse is Great Yarmouth, with the coastal course providing him with 15 of his 100 winners to date.
Whether the Brazilian’s lead is unassailable in the run up to the conclusion on 21st October on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot only time will tell. To keep up-to-date with latest in the Stobart Flat Jockeys’ Championship here.
