Silk Series winner Nicholls delighted to be nominated for September’s Stobart Jockey of the Month

September Jockey of the Month

2018 Silk Series winner Megan Nicholls admitted it was ‘a pleasant surprise’ to be nominated for September’s Jockey of the Month side alongside Ryan Moore and Daniel Tudhope.

Nicholls lifted the Tufnell Trophy for the second consecutive year on Ladies’ Day at Doncaster Racecourse on Thursday 13 September, while Moore is nominated for another stellar month including winning the William Hill St Leger aboard Kew Gardens and the Doncaster Cup with Thomas Hobson in consecutive days at Doncaster, with both races forming part of the QIPCO British Champions Series. Tudhope completes the trio, having won a huge 1,559/1 treble at Ayr on 20 September and also the Doncaster’s Flying Childers Stakes aboard Soldier’s Call on 14 September.

Nicholls, 21, was shocked to receive her nomination but paid tribute to the Silk Series, a race series specifically designed for female jockeys.

“It’s a pleasant surprise to be nominated for September’s Jockey of the Month prize! Ryan Moore and Danny Tudhope are two of the best jockeys in the weighing room,” Nicholls said.

“It’s slightly surreal to be nominated alongside Ryan and Danny. Ryan is up there with the best jockeys in the world, while Danny is riding out of his skin and is having an amazing season in the Stobart Flat Jockeys’ Championship.

“To be up against them is awesome and it’s all thanks to the Silk Series, which is a fantastic initiative.”

Three-time Stobart Champion Flat Jockey Moore is nominated for Stobart Jockey of the Month for the first time this year. He was the leading jockey at the William Hill St Leger Festival with five victories, including winning the British Classic for the second consecutive year, this time aboard Kew Gardens.

Tudhope also received his first nomination this year after landing the infamous treble at Ayr Racecourse on 20 September. The three horses were Saryshaggan (12/1) in the S T Andrew Plant Hire Handicap, Dolphin Vista (14/1) in the William Hill Doonside Cup, and Liamba (7/1) in the Wedding Congratulations To Billy & Margaret Handicap.

Ditcheat-based Nicholls paid tribute to trainer Richard Fahey for contributing to her second consecutive Silk Series title, and revealed it would cap off a memorable month if she also won the Jockey of the Month prize.

She said: “Half way through the season I had a couple of winners for Richard Fahey and that propelled me up to the top of the leader board, which got me properly going in the rankings.

“From then on I managed to pick up some valuable place points. Mr Fahey helped me tremendously and without him I don’t think I could have won the Silk Series title this year.

“It would be a remarkable month if I was to add this award to the Silk Series title. It really would top it all off, so fingers crossed!”
