And yet it’s steeped in myth and legend, a part-time paragon of showmanship, of fellowship, of Britishness, but with recorded reverberations around the world. Once a year, this fallow field is transformed into a cacophonous carnival, with the eagerly-awaited line-up drawing a cast of semi-smelly stars and a crowd of tipsy-turning thousands, not to mention the millions tuning in, joining in, rejoicing in a national celebration.
