Oisin Murphy storms to 100 winners as jockeys’ title race heats up
Oisin Murphy secured a century of winners for the season with his victory on Kyllang Rock at Nottingham Racecourse today, as the race to become 2019 Champion Jockey heats up.
Murphy is going head to head with Daniel Tudhope to become Champion Jockey for the first time in both of their careers, in what is shaping up to be one of the most exciting title races in years.
On reaching the milestone, Murphy said: “It’s a great feeling to reach 100 winners for the season. I’ve been working as hard as I can and can’t thank everyone who’s supporting me enough. Although I ride the horses, I wouldn’t be able to do it without the network of people around me and to those guys I’m so grateful.
“It has been an exciting title race so far but there’s still over 2 months left. I’ll be doing everything I can to keep my current momentum going. It would be a dream come true to be crowned Champion Jockey at Ascot for QIPCO British Champions Day.”
It is only the second time Murphy has secured 100 wins in the Championship, and he has done so from 544 rides, 57 fewer and over a month earlier than his maiden century last season.
|Season||Date reached 100 wins||Rides|
|2019||13th August 2019||544|
|2018||28th September 2018||601|
Performing at a strike-rate of 18%, Murphy now sits 10 wins ahead of Tudhope and 34 victories in front of three-time Champion Jockey, Silvestre De Sousa who is in third place – see the latest 2019 Flat Jockeys’ Championship table here.
Stand-out performances for the 23-year-old this season include his two Group 1 successes with Deirdre and Veracious in the Qatar Nassau Stakes at Goodwood and Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket respectively – both 2019 QIPCO British Champions Series races.
Murphy’s most successful track this season has been Windsor with a total of 22 wins, and his most successful trainer partnership has been with Andrew Balding, with the pair enjoying 22 victories together. He has earned over £2m in prize money.
The 2019 Champion Flat Jockey will be crowned on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 19th October. More info & tickets here.
