Moore, Doyle and Mulrennan up for first Jockey of the Month Award
Ryan Moore, James Doyle and Paul Mulrennan are the three jockeys up for the inaugural Stobart Flat Jockey of the Month Award as part of the new Flat Jockeys’ Championship.
The award, in association with Channel 4, will recognise jockeys’ achievements across each of the six months of the Flat Championship period and will recognise a whole range of accomplishments including, but not limited to, an individual ride, a high number of wins or strike rate, a return from injury, a newcomer success or Group win.
A shortlist of three jockeys will be announced at the end of each month, as chosen by a panel of Channel 4 presenters and released online to the public. The winner will then be decided by a second panel shortly after, comprising of a range of industry experts including racing journalists and presenters.
The Jockey of the Month will be presented with a cheque for £2,000 along with a £500 cash prize for a charity of their choice on Channel 4 Racing.
The finalists for the month of May include current leader in the Championship, Ryan Moore who made a clean sweep in the first two British Classics of the season at Newmarket; Lockinge and Brigadier Gerard winner James Doyle; and top northern-based jockey Paul Mulrennan who has enjoyed a great start to the season with 17 early wins.
Channel 4 Racing presenter, Graham Cunningham, says: “One of the real strengths of the new title system is that the monthly prizes enable jockeys from right across the board to be recognised. Ryan Moore, James Doyle and Paul Mulrennan all enjoyed a May to remember but I’m sure a host of different names will receive the recognition they deserve as the season progresses.”
Jockey Paul Mulrennan said of his nomination: “It has been a great start to the Championship so far and to be shortlisted for Jockey of the Month really tops it off. It’s great that as part of the Championship everyone in the Weighing Room has the opportunity to receive the recognition they deserve.”
