Michael Owen leads tributes as jockey Kingscote reaches landmark 1,000th winner at Lingfield
Jockey Richard Kingscote sealed his 1,000th career victory with Sha La La La Lee at Lingfield Racecourse on Saturday, joining an illustrious list of jockeys to have reached the landmark.
The win also sees Kingscote increase his impressive tally at Lingfield – his second best performing track throughout his career – to 117 wins. He has also reached treble figures at Wolverhampton (208) and Haydock (101).
Originally from Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, the 33 year-old is now based with trainer Tom Dascombe at Manor House Stables in Cheshire, which is owned by ex-England footballer, Michael Owen.
Owen led the tributes to the jockey as he said, “Richard is a fantastic jockey. For any athlete to reach 1,000 wins in their sport is a superb achievement, and it is a testament to the hard work he puts in every day.
“We have enjoyed many great memories together with my involvement at Manor House Stables, and the wins with Brown Panther at Royal Ascot, The Dubai Gold Cup and Irish St Leger will live with me forever. I hope we can continue to enjoy many more successful moments together in the forthcoming years.”
Kingscote joins a stellar list of jockeys to have reached 1,000 wins including current jockeys Frankie Dettori, James Doyle and three-time Stobart Champion Flat Jockey, Silvestre De Sousa.
On reaching the landmark, Kingscote said, “I never once thought I would be here today talking about my 1,000th winner as a jockey. If you ask anyone who saw me riding when I was 18, they would tell you the same. My father was a builder, I don’t come from a racing background, so I feel very privileged to be able to do this as a job. To have now reached 1,000 winners in a sport I love is amazing.
“I would like to thank all of the trainers and owners that have continued to support me, particularly Tom Dascombe who I have been with for 12 years now and our partnership has been key to my success. I’d also like to thank my agent, Guy Jewell, who has been with me since my second year as a jockey, and again has been instrumental.
“My favourite win is probably on Brown Panther at Royal Ascot. It is my favourite meeting, to ride a winner there is a special feeling and I’m lucky to have done so a few times. The Dubai Gold Cup was also extremely satisfying as I was coming back from injury but Tom put his faith in me and thankfully it paid off.”
Amongst the 1,000 winners, Kingscote has enjoyed a host of major wins including on the Michael-Owen owned, Brown Panther in the Goodwood Cup in 2013. He has also enjoyed three winners at Royal Ascot, the first coming with Brown Panther in the King George V Stakes in 2011, then with Ceiling Kitty in the 2012 Queen Mary Stakes and in 2018 with Arthur Kitt in the Chesham Stakes.
Richard’s career has also seen him enjoy a number of successful nights across the shores, most notably his Dubai Gold Cup win with Brown Panther in 2015 and with the same horse in the Irish St Leger in 2014 – a first Group 1 victory for the jockey.
