Dettori named June Jockey of the Month

A weekend which ended with Frankie Dettori interviewing Lewis Hamilton on the podium at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone began with the Italian being named the Stobart Jockey of the Month for June.

Dettori, who later went on to win the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown aboard the unbeaten star Golden Horn, beat apprentice jockey Samantha Bell and the current leader of the Stobart Flat Jockeys’ Championship, Ryan Moore.

Voted for by a panel of industry experts, Dettori was rewarded for a spectacular month which saw him win the Investec Derby at Epsom with Golden Horn as well as the Tercentenary Stakes and Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot with Time Test and Undrafted respectively.

He was presented with his award by The Times’ Alan Lee and Channel 4’s Emma Spencer.

Dettori told Channel 4 Racing: “The Derby, the Prix De Diane and the Diamond Jubilee, it was beyond my wildest dreams to win those three races in a month. Beating Ryan Moore who has broken a Royal Ascot record with nine wins makes it an extra special moment.”

As part of the competition, each winning jockey receives a £500 charity donation, but Dettori also chose to donate the £2,000 cash prize; splitting the fund between charities Direct Aid for Africa and The Fortune Riding Centre.
