Dettori named Jockey of the Month for second successive month
Frankie Dettori has been named Jockey of the Month for July, scooping the prize for a second successive month, and becoming the first to do so since Bryony Frost in November and December 2017.
The 48-year-old continued his impressive performances from June into July, securing four UK Group 1 races in the month – each of which came in 2019 QIPCO British Champions Series Races.
Dettori claims the Jockey of the Month award after receiving 44% of the vote, ahead of second-placed apprentice jockey, Cieren Fallon JR, who received 33%. Daniel Tudhope finished third in the competition after receiving 23% of the vote.
Two of the four Group 1 victories in July for Dettori came in historic fashion with Enable – who he has acclaimed the ‘Queen of Racing”. Firstly, in the Coral Eclipse at Sandown on Saturday 6th July and secondly in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes at Ascot towards the end of the month – taking the pairs unbeaten run to 11 successive wins.
Dettori added two more Group 1 wins to his collection for the month at the Qatar Goodwood Festival, beginning with Stradivarius in the Qatar Goodwood Cup Stakes and then with Too Darn Hot in the Qatar Sussex Stakes.
On being named Jockey of the Month for July, Dettori said: “It’s fantastic to be named Jockey of the Month for the second month in a row. I couldn’t have wished for July to go any better if I’m honest. The two wins on Enable were amazing – that feeling coming back into the winner’s enclosure at Ascot after the King George is a feeling I will never forget. To win that race in the way we did was unbelievable.
“Again, with Stradivarius and Too Darn Hot – those are the kind of wins that you will remember forever. It really doesn’t get much better than those. I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me.”
On the same day he and Enable secured the Coral Eclipse at Sandown, Dettori also added to more wins to his belt with Mojito and Falcon Eight resulting in an impressive treble. During the month he also secured victories at Newmarket, Chelmsford City, Doncaster and Newbury – taking his tally for July to 13 wins.
In winning the competition, Frankie Dettori is awarded £1,000 and a £500 charity donation of his choice. Dettori has chosen The Racing Centre as his chosen charity.
The Jockey of the Month competition is organised by Great British Racing in partnership with Sun Racing received a record amount of votes this month with over 3,800 votes.
