Cheltenham Reaction: Shock and Awe At Prestbury Park

There may not have been a golden hour quite like 2019 but day three of the 2020 Cheltenham Festival pulled out a number of epic stories to go alongside a brilliant day of top class clashes.

It didn’t take long for the drama to grip Prestbury Park as the opener, a highly competitive Marsh Novice’s chase was won by the smallest of margins in a photo finish.

Gordon Elliot produced a monumental training performance to get Samcro back to his top-class best. The eight-year-old produced arguably the best display of his career to reverse the form on favourite Faugheen and get the better of Melon on the line. So close not even Davy Russell knew he had the victory in the bag!

In the Pertemps Final Gordon Elliot seemed to have the midas touch as both The Storyteller and Sire Du Berlais flew the last together in front. It was however Sire Du Berlais who powered up the hill strongest to land the trainer his fifth winner of the meeting.

Having seen Elliott turn in the first two winners it was the turn of Mullins and Ricci to take their share of the spotlight. Min, a horse who had missed out on the winner’s enclosure at the Cheltenham Festival on three previous occasions was to finally have his day in the sun and Paul Townend drove him up the famous Cheltenham Hill to take the Ryanair Chase. Relief for all involved!

In the Championship race of the day, the Paddy Power Stayers Hurdle, the script was well and truly torn up. Last year’s Cheltenham hero, Paisley Park travelled well throughout, but it was syndicate superstar Lisnigar Oscar who went on to claim the prize at a huge price at 50/1! Trainer Rebecca Curtis was in absolute dreamland alongside the Racing For Fun syndicate who got more than they bargained for as their man travelled beautifully before hitting the front down the straight.
