Cheltenham Reaction: Mullins Mania On Day Four

Mullins mania took hold on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival as he made four consecutive trips to the winners enclosure in the space of two and a half hours.

It started with a hint of good fortunte in the first, the JCB Triumph Hurdle. Hot favourite Goshen, representing the Moore duo was prominent throughout and absolutely tanked to the front of the field, all but demolishing his rivals before guessing at the final fence and unseating the helpless Jamie Moore. There to pick up the pieces was the Mullins trained Burning Victory who fought bravely to hold off his rivals. A distraught Jamie Moore did however have the multiple Champion Jockey AP McCoy there to put an arm around him and reassure him that his time will come again.

The Triumph Hurdle was to be a precursor to what was to come as master trainer Willie Mullins made it a quick-fire double in the County Hurdle. Favourite Saint Roi cruised into the race from off the pace to oblige for Barry Geraghty who continued his stupendous week with a fifth victory.

The Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle threw up one of the race’s of the festival as Monkfish, Latest Exhibition and Fury Road took the last in a line. However, it was Paul Townend and Monkfish who stayed on strongest to win the race and land Willie Mullins a third victory of the day and a sixth of the meeting.

Then would come the most special of races with the added possibility of a feat rarely managed, a chance at back-to-back Gold Cup’s for Mullins, Townend and Al Boum Photo. Last year’s victor went off as favourite and my word did he justify it. A fluid round of jumping paired with astonishing grit, bravery and top-class finishing speed meant that Paul Townend would see his superstar home in-front of a jubilent Festival crowd.

Their was plenty of reaction on social media from an action packed day at The Festival….
