Frankie Dettori, Oisin Murphy and Andrea Atzeni have all been nominated for May’s Jockey of the Month competition, following some stand-out performances in the opening month of the 2019 Flat Jockeys’ Championship.
Three-time Champion Flat Jockey, Dettori kicked off the opening month of the 2019 season with 13 victories, including notable wins with Stradivarius in the Matchbook Yorkshire Cup at York Racecourse and then securing the Investec Oaks with Anapurna at Epsom Racecourse – resulting in his fifth victory in the prestigious race.
The 48-year-old began the month strongly, securing a treble at Ascot on Wednesday 1st May with excellent wins on Muchly, Calyx and Zuuchi.
The Matchbook Yorkshire Cup success with Stradivarius, was one of four victories for the Italian-born jockey across the famous Dante Festival. The other three wins came with Lah Ti Dar in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton Fillies’ Stakes, plus a double on the opening day of the festival with First Eleven and Bomb Proof.

On being nominated, Dettori said: “It was a great month and a perfect way to end it by winning the Oaks. That has to be the highlight for me as it was such a courageous performance by Anapurna. It’s an honour to be nominated for Jockey of the Month and thank you to anyone who votes for me.”

23-year-old, Murphy, secured a stunning total of 28 victories in May, meaning he ended the month top of the 2019 Flat Jockeys’ Championship. Amongst these were trebles at Windsor and Lingfield, plus a total of five wins during Goodwood’s May Festival.
However, the big win in May for Murphy came at York Racecourse in the prestigious Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes. A fantastic victory aboard Telecaster secured Murphy’s second successive win the race – the first time a jockey has achieved this since Olivier Peslier’s triumphs in 1996 and 1997.

On being nominated for Jockey of the Month, he said: “First of all, it’s very nice to be nominated, especially as there has been many top riders this month. Telecaster winning the Dante Stakes at York gave me a huge thrill. Hughie Morrison is a great supporter of mine and it’s fantastic to find a great horse like that.
“Another highlight for me was Pondus winning at Sandown under a penalty in a Novice race. He looks something to look forward to. I’d just like to keep riding winners now and keep everyone happy and stay in one piece. That’s the goal!”
Other notable wins for Murphy during the month included aboard Salouen in the Carey Group Buckhounds Stakes at Ascot Racecourse, and a thrilling victory with 28/1-shot Isaan Queen in the totepool Chelmer Fillies’ Stakes at Chelmsford City Racecourse.
Atzeni saved his best until last in May, with an amazing treble at Epsom Racecourse on the final day of the month.
This began with a win aboard Gossiping in the Investec Mile Handicap Stakes, which was immediately followed by a thrilling triumph with Defoe in the Investec Coronation Cup, part of the QIPCO British Champions Series, and then wrapped-up in the next race with success in the Investec Wealth & Management Handicap Stakes aboard Mountain Angel.
The 28-year-old notched 11 wins throughout the opening month of the 2019 Flat Jockeys’ Championship. Including three wins at York’s Dante Festival, beginning with a fabulous win with 14/1-shot Nausha in the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes.
Amongst the Italian’s other successes in May were a double at Nottingham Racecourse and a brilliant win with Cape Byron in the Tote Victoria Cup at Ascot Racecourse.
Discussing his month, Atzeni said: “Obviously the three winners at Epsom including the Coronation Cup was huge for me and something I am very proud of, but it’s been a good month all-round.
“It’s great to be nominated especially against Oisin who is on top form at the moment and Frankie who continues to ride as good as he ever has.”
